現代語訳
中の町の塩売りの旗を残念に思い、月見の客がなくて困る女郎屋の亭主と相談して、外見へ月見というのを請け負う。女郎は客を嫌がったけれども、親方の承知なればやむを得ず、外見へ月見をしてもらう。されどもこれも楽しみにした門内にただ一軒にて、大いに手来い負けがして懲りはてけり。
ただ者の提灯、表通りへばかり吊るす。
「主人は拍子を踏む役かえばかしい。そして提灯のただ者がきざだね」
♪拍子さえ踏めば囮と聞こえるは先めどこをばきっと踏みやす。この内ばかりが急速だ

Feeling regretful about the salt seller's banner in Naka-no-cho, and troubled by the lack of moon-viewing customers, he consulted with the brothel keeper to take on what they called "outdoor moon viewing." Though the courtesans disliked the customers, since it was the proprietor's decision, they had no choice but to provide outdoor moon viewing services. However, even this anticipated pleasure, with only one establishment within the gate area, resulted in a great loss of business and they became thoroughly discouraged.
Ordinary people's lanterns are hung only on the main street.
"The master playing the role of keeping rhythm is foolish. And those ordinary people with lanterns are pretentious."
