現代語訳
子の日の遊びは時節が悪いので旗を垂れたけれども、この度の鹿狩き・虫狩きは、きっと当てる分別にて、道灌山へ鹿を連れて行って鳴かせる趣向なり。虫も少なくては面白くないと、よほど虫籠を仕込む。とかく設けることはついになく、旗は情けないものである。
「聞いてはあの三人ばかりだそうな。この切り子は押し出しそうで、とんと鳴かぬ。さてさて世話なことだ」
♪耐えず鳴きをれというのに、この畜生、人に世話をやかせる。これでも鳴かぬか

The Rat Day festivities had poor timing, so they lowered their banners, but this time's deer hunting and insect hunting was planned with the good sense that it would surely succeed. They took deer to Doukan-yama to make them cry - this was the scheme. Thinking that if there were too few insects it wouldn't be interesting, they prepared quite a few insect cages. In the end, there was no profit to be made, and the banners were pitiful.
"I heard there are only about three of them. This one looks like it might perform, but it won't sing at all. What a troublesome thing."
