現代語訳
顔見せ興行で大当たりを取る気でいて、金元となり、座中全員が同意しない狂言を書かせ、我一人喜んでいたが、見物客は一切関心を示さず、大当たりどころか十日ほどで打ち切り、十五日より別の狂言をしてようやく茶を濁した。
♪役者みな心にそまぬ狂言といい、入りはなし、大いにそそる
♪東夷南蛮北狄西戎四夷八荒天地乾坤の其間に又とあるまい狂言を書きの主は向こう、つらつらりと習うしつこと、今年を召す奥説、上毛から一声白益金腰の被りは元より覚悟の前、前髪ならぬ相熊の愛想の尽きた顔見せは、あんまり茶々との評判で、生坊主が縛り首、切り落としでも三式でもちらりほらりの皆様を、サヨリに此歯を丸にあつけてくれば鳥、怪しい公家の連ね方、遠く敬って申す

Intending to score a big hit with the kaomise (face-showing) performance, he became the financial backer and had a play written that none of the troupe agreed with. While he alone was pleased, the audience showed no interest whatsoever. Far from being a hit, it closed after about ten days, and from the fifteenth day they performed a different play, barely managing to save face.
♪All the actors say it's a play that doesn't touch the heart, with no audience - how very stirring!
