現代語訳
天野邪九郎は思った。「今の人々は皆苦しい身の上でも、風流なことを好むものだから、大宮人の遊びを真似して、正月の初子の日に小松引きをさせて遊ばせ、金儲けをしよう。今年は七草が子の日にあたるので、このことを前もって世間に広く知らせよう。」
姪が原を借り切って、小松と若菜をたくさん植えておき、堺町の中村屋で被り物や装束、烏帽子や狩衣、十二単まで借り出して、子の日の遊びをする人に安い料金で貸そうと、一式揃えて大掛かりに用意したけれど、七草の日のことなので、誰も来て見る人もなく、たまたま暇な人が来て見ても、小松を引いて遊ぶ人は全くなく、まして装束などを借りて着る人は一人もなかった。
初春の初子の今日の大仕事は、全く当てが外れたのろまなやつと、陰口や悪口などで皆人は通り過ぎていった。
「珍しいなあ、何の見せ物だ？」
「小松を引いてどうするんだい？家へ持って帰って植えた所で使い道がないじゃないか。」
「なんだかさっぱりわからない。」
「小松引きましょう、若菜摘みましょう、遊んでいらっしゃいませ。」

Amano Jakuro thought to himself: "People nowadays, even though they struggle financially, still love elegant pastimes. I'll imitate the court nobles' amusements and have them pick small pines on New Year's first Day of the Rat, and make money from it. This year, the seven herbs day falls on the Day of the Rat, so I'll spread word of this throughout society beforehand."
He rented out Uneme-ga-hara field, planted many small pines and young herbs, and borrowed headwear, ceremonial costumes, court caps, hunting robes, and even twelve-layered court garments from Nakamuraya in Sakai-cho. He prepared everything on a grand scale, planning to rent them cheaply to people who wanted to enjoy the Day of the Rat festivities. However, since it was the day of the seven herbs, no one came to look, and even the occasional idle passerby who did come to see would never actually pick pines for amusement. Not a single person borrowed and wore the ceremonial costumes.
His grand enterprise for this first Day of the Rat of early spring completely failed, and everyone passed by making snide remarks and speaking ill of him as a slow-witted fool.
