現代語訳
二月になったので、二十七、八日から三月、四月まで、雛飾りというものを考案した。一間棚、九尺棚、二間棚など、希望次第で申し受けることを始めた。大きな雛人形より、犬、猫、膳椀、雛道具、泥の盃に至るまで取り揃え、造花作りの花まで取り揃えて、代金はいくらと定めた。
初雛の寂しい所などでは、飛びついて借りそうなことと思ったが、思いの外、何か古い雛人形かもしれず、縁起の悪いことだと言って、他の安い物と違って、誰一人借りる人がなく、この仕込みは大きく外れ、大損をしたので、この損を取り返そうとまたまた不良計画を考えた。
♪「それが暮れば、まず一揃い、大層揃う。それは山印であろう。」
♪「二十通り仕込んだ所が、皆売り手があっても十年ほど経たねば、元は取り返せない積もりだ。その内にはまた段々古くなって、始末してみれば利益はいつあることだか。」

When February came, from around the 27th or 28th day through March and April, he devised hina doll displays. He began accepting orders for shelving of various sizes - one-ken shelves, nine-shaku shelves, two-ken shelves - whatever was desired. He assembled everything from large hina dolls to dogs, cats, dining sets, doll accessories, and even clay sake cups, along with artificial flowers, and set prices for them all.
He thought that places celebrating their first Doll Festival, being rather sparse in decorations, would eagerly rent his items. However, contrary to his expectations, people said these might be old used dolls and would bring bad luck. Unlike other cheap goods, not a single person rented from him, so this venture failed spectacularly and caused him great losses. To recover these losses, he once again devised another dubious scheme.
♪ "When that time passes, first we'll have a complete set, all properly arranged. That must be the 'mountain mark' set."
♪ "Even though I've prepared twenty different types and there are buyers for all of them, it would take about ten years to recover the initial investment. By then everything will have gotten old and deteriorated, so when you calculate it all, when will there ever be any profit?"
