芦にて屋根を葺掛下《割書：タ｜》 にも芦を折敷破袷古
草履履干魚の類有之候付扨は住《割書：ム》人も有之候哉と猶も
尋行候処日も晩景し給ひ殊に嶮岨の土地中に
易意に可参様も無之一先元之場所へ罷帰翌朝も
亦三人連にて段々尋行候処凡島の東の方登り三十
丁計の岩山有り殊にはけしくそひへ上り峨々たる
岩角踏分て漸と取登り遥にしたを見おろし候へは
怪しき人かけ見へ候付声を懸候処彼の者も是を
見付あちこちと■【足ヵ】相宜敷場所を此形にて教候に付
色々としてたとりおり候へは髪髭長くのひみたれ
鳥のつはさをつき合せ着物のことく身にまどひさも
異体の者居候付いかなる者と相尋候へは是は三年
以前土州船四人乗にて漂着致候所三人は病死致し
残壱人当島に罷在食物迚も無之候へは島に居候鳥を
たゝき殺し或は磯魚抔釣候て辛き命をつなき罷在
つゝ旨則右之洞小屋へ同道致し残人数をも呼寄

草履、干し魚の類があったので、さては住人もいるのかと、なおも
探して行ったところ、日も夕暮れになり、特に険しい土地の中で

また三人連れで段々と探して行ったところ、およそ島の東の方に登り三十
町ほどの岩山があり、特に険しくそそり立って上がり、ごつごつした
岩角を踏み分けてやっとのことで登り、はるかに下を見下ろすと、
怪しい人影が見えたので声をかけたところ、その者もこれを
見つけて、あちこちと都合の良い場所をこの様子で教えたので、
色々としてたどり降りると、髪髭長く伸び乱れ、
鳥の翼を縫い合わせて着物のように身にまとい、いかにも
異様な者がいたので、どのような者かと尋ねると、これは三年
以前、土佐の船で四人乗りで漂着したところ、三人は病死し、
残り一人が当島に住んでいる、食物といってもないので、島にいる鳥を
叩き殺し、あるいは磯魚などを釣って辛い命をつないで住んで
いるとのこと。そこで右の洞窟小屋へ同道し、残りの人数をも呼び寄せ、
三日のうちにいたところ、人数が多く住居も都合が悪く、外に
葦で小屋などを設えたところ、度々大風に吹き潰されるので、

straw sandals, and dried fish, so thinking there might be inhabitants, they continued
searching, but as the day was drawing to evening, and especially in such treacherous terrain,
there seemed to be no easy way to proceed, so they first returned to their original location. The next morning
again three men together gradually searched, and found that roughly on the eastern side of the island there was a rocky mountain requiring a climb of about thirty
cho, particularly steep and towering upward. They climbed the craggy
rock faces, stepping carefully over the jagged rocks, and when they finally climbed up and looked far down below,
they saw a strange human figure, so they called out, and that person also
spotted them and gestured to indicate a suitable place to descend,
so they made their way down with difficulty to find a person with long, disheveled
hair and beard, wearing bird wings sewn together like clothing wrapped around his body, truly
a bizarre-looking individual. When they asked what manner of person he was, he said he had
drifted ashore three years earlier on a ship from Tosa Province with four people aboard, three had died of illness,
