現代語訳
茶釜は化け物の訳を人々に告げ知らせんと思えども、我が姿の怪しければ現れも出難く、案じ煩う様子を立ち聞きする。
「はて気の毒な化け物の訳を知らせたいものだ」
絵師、草紙屋、板木屋三人は初春の新版仕込みと気は急げども、この頃家々の怪しきこと日に増しければ、何様訳あることならんと内より評議したりける。
〽「今夜は夜もすがら化け物も出もしますまい。気晴らしに酒杯をこう？だ」
〽「これは大杯、これで飲んでは忽ち息つき山の鳶烏、この間私などは化け物目に見そくさい川中へはめられました。それから今だ頭痛がいたします」
しかしながら古人も妖は特に語らず□□せばこちらの心持かもしれません。

英語訳
The tea kettle wanted to inform people about the circumstances of the supernatural being, but since its own appearance was suspicious, it was difficult to show itself, and it eavesdropped on their troubled deliberations.
