ルヲ悔ヰ或ハ其用ヲ爲サヽルヲ恐レ遽ニ藏人ニ拜
ス爲朝曰￣ク歒兵既ニ臨ム冝ク急ニ守禦ノ謀ヲ爲スヘ
シ吾何ソ藏人ヲ用ヰン是ニ於テ義朝大炊御門ヲ攻
ム爲義之ヲ拒ク爲朝賴賢ト先ヲ爭テ闘￣ハ ントス爲朝
以爲ク吾嚮ニ兄長ヲ侵凌スルヲ以テ罪ヲ得タリ今

又兄ト先ヲ爭フ是吾罪ヲ重￣ス ルナリ乃￣チ頼賢ニ謝シテ
曰￣ク阿先セヨ若歒勁ニシテ當リ難クハ速ニ吾ニ命
セヨ清盛進テ二條河原ニ東堤ニ至ル其將伊藤景綱
二子伊藤五、伊藤六ト先￣ツ進ム爲朝之射テ五ノ胸ヲ
貫キ六ノ袖ニ徹ス清盛大ニ惧レテ退ク其騎山田伊
行憤憿反￣リ戰￣フ、爲朝又射テ之ヲ斃ス其馬逸シテ義朝ノ
陣ニ入ル鏃リ鞍ヲ穿ツ大サ巨鑒ノ如シ其將鎌田正
清取テ義朝ニ獻シテ曰￣ク是必八郎君ノ射ル所ナラン
義朝曰￣ク彼年弱冠筋力未タ固カラス何ソ此ノ如キ矢
ヲ放ツヲ得ンヤ詐リ設テ歒ヲ畏スノミ汝往テ試ミ

朝に贈る。為朝は躯幹が絶大で着用することができず、独り別の甲冑を
着用した。為朝は諸子を従え百騎をもって西門を守る。為朝は二十
八人をもって西河原門を守る。やがて義朝・清盛等が大
軍を率いて来て攻めた。諜者がこれを報告すると、上皇は大いに驚いた。為
朝は怒って言った。「果たして我が言の通りである」頼長は為朝の言を用い
なかったことを悔い、あるいはその用をなさないことを恐れ、急いで蔵人に拝
した。為朝は言った。「敵兵がすでに迫っている。宜しく急いで守御の謀を為すべし。
我何ぞ蔵人を用いん」ここにおいて義朝は大炊御門を攻
めた。為義はこれを拒いだ。為朝は頼賢と先陣を争って戦おうとした。為朝は
思った。「我は先に兄長を侵凌することで罪を得た。今

また兄と先陣を争う。これは我が罪を重ねることである」そこで頼賢に謝して
言った。「兄上が先にお進みください。もし敵が強くて当たり難ければ、速やかに我に命
じてください」清盛は進んで二条河原の東堤に至った。その将伊藤景綱、
二子の伊藤五、伊藤六が先に進んだ。為朝はこれを射て五の胸を
貫き、六の袖を貫通した。清盛は大いに恐れて退いた。その騎士山田伊
行は憤慨して引き返し戦った。為朝はまた射てこれを斃した。その馬は逸して義朝の
陣に入った。鏃が鞍を穿った大きさは巨大な鏡のようであった。その将鎌田正
清はそれを取って義朝に献じて言った。「これは必ず八郎君の射た所でありましょう」
義朝は言った。「彼は年若く、筋力は未だ固まっていない。どうしてこのような矢を
放つことができようか。偽り設けて敵を畏れさせるのみ。汝往って試してみよ」

朝 received one. Tametomo's body was so enormous that he could not wear the armor, so he alone wore
different armor. Tametomo, leading his sons with a hundred horsemen, defended the west gate. Tametomo with twenty-
eight men defended the Nishi-Kawara gate. Soon after, Yoshitomo, Kiyomori and others came attacking with a large
army. When spies reported this, the Retired Emperor was greatly alarmed. Tame-
tomo angrily said: "Indeed, it is just as I predicted!" Yorinaga regretted not having heeded Tametomo's words,
and perhaps fearing that he would not serve effectively, hastily appointed him to the position of Kurōdo (chamberlain).
Tametomo said: "The enemy forces are already upon us. We should quickly devise defensive strategies.
Why would I need the position of Kurōdo now?" At this point, Yoshitomo attacked the Ōi-mikado gate.
Yoshitomo resisted this. Tametomo was about to compete with Yoriken for the vanguard position in battle. Tametomo
thought: "I previously committed a sin by opposing my elder brother. Now

to compete with my brother again for the vanguard would compound my sins." So he apologized to Yoriken and
said: "Please go ahead, elder brother. If the enemy proves too strong to handle, quickly give me your command."
Kiyomori advanced and reached the eastern embankment at Nijō-Kawara. His general Itō Kagetuna and
his two sons Itō Go and Itō Roku advanced first. Tametomo shot them, piercing Go through the chest
and penetrating Roku's sleeve. Kiyomori was greatly frightened and retreated. His mounted warrior Yamada Yoshi-
yuki, filled with rage, turned back to fight. Tametomo shot again and killed him. His horse bolted and entered Yoshitomo's
camp. The arrowhead that pierced the saddle was as large as a huge mirror. His general Kamada Masa-
kiyo took it and presented it to Yoshitomo, saying: "This must surely be shot by Hachirō-kun (Tametomo)."
Yoshitomo said: "He is young in years, and his physical strength is not yet fully developed. How could he loose such an arrow?
This is merely a false device to frighten the enemy. Go and test this."
