【Right folio】
The household members taught him, saying "do this" and "do that," and had him assist with all manner of tasks. Sonjichi worked diligently with an easygoing spirit and quick wit, so the master, as well as the clerks and servants, grew increasingly at ease with him. Because of this, he resolved to serve faithfully and honestly until the end of his days, opening his heart fully to his work. The master grew ever fonder of him, calling out "Jitsupon! Jitsupon!" on every occasion, and Sonjichi did his best to meet these expectations in any way he could. Morning and evening he kept in his heart the hope that somehow, from this very place, he might find a way to return to his homeland.
【Left folio】
Yet, even though he felt this way, there was no opportunity to bring such a matter up, and he simply threw himself into his service and continued to work diligently. Unlike the various hardships he had endured in places he had been before, this place was exceedingly comfortable and easy to live in, and so for the time being he watched and waited here for an opportunity to return home. Now, from the night of the first day of the seventh month, large lanterns were lit at the gate as part of the Obon festival. From the thirteenth day, it was observed as a Bon memorial service, with the family altar decorated and offerings of food prepared morning and evening, including pig, sheep, and chicken.
