現代語訳
小しほは身の苦しみに思い比べをし、「鳥もさぞ妻恋しいであろう」と不憫に思い、いや増しに籠より出して放してやる。
「助八さんはどうしてこんなに遅いことでしょう。もはや内にはいられません。」
鴛鴦は喜んで飛んでいく。
助八は二三日脇の村にいたが、小しほからの手紙を見て、連れて逃げようと戻ってくる。
ねじかね婆は呆れ果て、また手を変え、恐ろしい責めに遭わせようと大宮司のもとへ行く。
「さても、さても憎らしい女ですね。この上は旦那様と相談して括り上げ、小刀針で一両日苦しませ申しましょう。」
英語訳
Oshio, suffering in her torment, compares her situation to that of others and thinks with pity, "The birds must surely long for their mates as well," and with growing compassion, releases them from their cage.

Josuke had been in a neighboring village for two or three days, but upon seeing a letter from Oshio, returns intending to take her away with him.
Old woman Nejikane is utterly exasperated and, changing her tactics again, goes to the Daiguji to subject Oshio to terrible torment.
"What a truly detestable woman she is! At this point, I shall consult with you, master, tie her up, and torment her with small blade needles for a day or two."
