道
現代語訳
大次郎は今更目が覚めて後悔すれども甲斐なく、世の中を味気なく思い捨てて書き置きを残し、浅草川へ身を沈めるとて立ち出でて行く。行方知れざれば感動しても両親、姑ともどもに恩愛の道に迷うて立ち出ずれば、妻子も恋慕の道に迷えば、金貸し並びに茶屋掛け取りも利欲の道に迷い、奉公人も恩義に迷い、出家も法器に迷い、遊女も色欲に迷い、振り袖も高慢の心に迷うて、ともどもに跡を慕うて尋ね尋ねて、迷いの道に右往左往している。

〽神武天皇は秋津洲の形の島に乗っておられるが、私は迷いという字の道にいます。
【母】
〽どこにどうしているやら、狐にでも化かされているのではないか。
【息子、母の手に引かれて】
〽お母さん、疲れたよ。

〽俺は掛けは取ってしまう。品物にも用はないが、なぜここへ来たか。
【遊女】
〽まあ、おいらん、妙な道だね。
〽向こうが武蔵野かい。

Daijirō now awakened to his situation and regretted it, but to no avail. Finding the world tasteless, he abandoned it, left behind a farewell note, and set out to drown himself in the Asakusa River. Since his whereabouts became unknown, even though his parents and mother-in-law were moved with emotion, they wandered lost on the path of parental love. His wife and children wandered lost on the path of longing love, money lenders and teahouse debt collectors wandered lost on the path of greed, servants wandered lost in obligations, monks wandered lost in religious vessels, courtesans wandered lost in carnal desire, and young women wandered lost in hearts of vanity. All together, they followed his traces, searching and searching, wandering about on the path of delusion.
