現代語訳
ある客が魚人（うをんと）が初日にやって来て、床が収まると屏風の内を真っ暗にして、黒子を着た者が後ろから手を出し、煙草を吸いつけて出す。いろいろと仕草はすっかり人間の通りに誤魔化していたけれども、とかく悪い生臭さがするので堪えかね、客は逃げ出そうとするのを人魚遣いは帰すまいと袖を引いて続いて駆け出した。肝心の本尊の人魚は今日の道中の疲れで、たわいなく寝入っていたので、手は遥か彼方にあって、頭は床の内にあるので、天から化けの皮を現してしまう。
♪何でもこの女郎は化け物だ。あの床の内からここまで手が届くとは、さてさて長い手だ。
【ここより下巻】
舞鶴屋の亭主が思いついて、近年の流行で初日から味噌をつけ、舞鶴屋には化け物が出るとか何とか評判になったので、人魚を一日も家におけず、ざっと見積もって七両二分を損失して、人主の平次を呼んで引き渡す。
♪いや、早くも突き出しの入用は言うまでもなく、九太夫己が非から、と言いながら、衣装から櫛笄、浴衣に屏風、夜着布団、半僧、火鉢、煙草盆、鏡台、提灯、長柄、下駄、箪笥、長持ち、更紗鉢、擦り粉木擦り鉢、パチパチガラガラ（算盤の音）、いくらの損か知れませんと、狐憑きに胡散を飲ませたように人魚の尾に尾をつけてしゃべる。

♪書き入れが多くなって本屋が打ちますから、私はただ「はい、はい」とばかり申しております。
英語訳
A certain customer came when the fish-person (uwonto) made her debut, and when the sleeping quarters were arranged, they made the inside of the folding screen completely dark, and someone dressed as a kuroko (stage assistant) extended hands from behind, lighting and offering tobacco. Though they tried to deceive with various gestures completely mimicking human behavior, the awful fishy smell was unbearable, so when the customer tried to flee, the mermaid handler wouldn't let him leave and grabbed his sleeve, chasing after him. The essential main attraction, the mermaid herself, had fallen carelessly asleep from the day's procession fatigue, so her hands were far away while her head was inside the sleeping quarters, thus revealing her supernatural nature from above.
♪Whatever the case, this courtesan is a monster. For her hands to reach from inside that sleeping area all the way here - what remarkably long arms!

The master of Maizuru-ya had an idea, and following recent trends, from the very first day things went wrong, and rumors spread that monsters appeared at Maizuru-ya or some such thing. So they couldn't keep the mermaid in the house even one day, and roughly estimating a loss of seven ryō and two bu, they called the human trafficker Heiji to hand her over.
♪Indeed, the expenses for the debut go without saying - it's Kyūdayū's own fault, he says - from costumes to combs and hairpins, summer kimono and folding screens, night robes and bedding, short jackets, braziers, tobacco trays, mirror stands, lanterns, long handles, geta sandals, chests, traveling trunks, printed bowls, pestles and mortars, clicking and clattering (sounds of the abacus) - who knows how much the loss amounts to!
