現代語訳
ここに釣り船の平次の近所に一人の博物学者がいたが、平次が人魚を女郎にして商売につくと聞き、彼に示して言うことには：
「それ本草（ほんそう）に人魚と称する者、二種あり。曰く鯷魚（ていぎょ）、曰く鯢魚（しぎょ）。また異物志に『人の形に似て長さ一尺余り、頭のうえに小さき穴あり』とは記してあるが、かかる化け物なる事を知らず。また昔より言い伝えるに、人魚を舐めたる者は千歳の寿命を保つと言えば、何にせよ金になる代物じゃ」と言われて、平次は大いに喜んだ。
さっそく門口へ「寿命の薬 人魚お舐め所」という安い看板を出したところ、何が無性によく欲張りで、天明の物差しにはずれて長生きをしたがる俗物どもが、千年生きると聞いて我も我もと舐めに来たりけるこそ愚かなれ。
♪ただし舐め賃は一人前、金一両一分ずつ。呼び出し中産と同じ値段なり。
