現代語訳

馬、海参（ナマコ）、螺石、シャコ、瑇瑁（タイマイ）、珊瑚、海石類を産する。紅酒を産出し、密林酒という。また草蓆が多い。○武富（タケトミ）島は、本島の西南にあり、周囲二里弱。○黒島は、また其の西南にあり、周囲三里、高さ百二十丈。西の二つの属島を上離、下離という。○波照間（ハテルマ）島は、また其の西南にあり、周囲三里二十丁。以上皆石垣に属する。

西表（イリオモテ）島は、石垣の於茂登（オモト）岳の西にあるゆえに名付けられた。方言で、深奥の所を「入（イリ）」といい、「表」は於茂登である。或いは西表（ニシオモテ）島、また古見（コミ）島とも称する。周囲十五里。西表、古見の二間切があり、三十村がある。気候・物産は石垣と同じ。西表蘭、風蘭を産する。東の古見、北の比計川村、西の曽奈比村の三港とも浅い。西湾に、内離、外離の二小島があるが、人家はない。○小浜（コハマ）島は、西表の東に接し、周囲三里。東北の属島である宇也末（ウヤマ）には人家がない。○鳩間（ハトマ）島は北にあり、古見間切に属する。○新城（アラグスク）島は、西南にある。○与那国（ヨナグニ）島は、西表の真西、遥か海上にある。中間の潮流は急である。島の周囲は五里十丁、高さ七十丈。琉球最西の島で、台湾島（琉球人は高砂（タカサゴ）という）に接している。以上の諸島は、皆西表に属する。

　北部諸島　中部諸島の北、少し東にある。大島が特に大きく、徳島、永良部等がこれに次ぐ。合わせて十ほどの島があり、総称して大島という。古くは琉球に属していたが、慶長以後、皆島津氏に帰し、今は鹿児島県に属する。○或いは大島、喜界、徳島を三島と称する。

英語訳

horses, sea cucumbers, conch shells, mantis shrimp, hawksbill turtle shells, coral, and various sea stones. It produces red wine called Mitsurin-shu. There are also many grass mats. ○Taketomi Island is located southwest of the main island, with a circumference of just under two ri. ○Kuro Island is also located to its southwest, with a circumference of three ri and a height of 120 jō. The two western subordinate islands are called Kami-hanare and Shimo-hanare. ○Hateruma Island is also located to its southwest, with a circumference of three ri and twenty chō. All of the above belong to Ishigaki.

Iriomote Island is named so because it is located west of Mount Omoto on Ishigaki. In the local dialect, deep interior places are called "iri," and "omote" refers to Omoto. It is also called Nishi-omote Island or Komi Island. It has a circumference of fifteen ri. It has two magiri, Iriomote and Komi, with thirty villages. The climate and products are the same as Ishigaki. It produces Iriomote orchids and wind orchids. The three ports - Komi in the east, Hikegawa village in the north, and Sonahi village in the west - are all shallow. In the western bay, there are two small islands, Uchi-hanare and Soto-hanare, but they have no houses. ○Kohama Island is adjacent to the east of Iriomote, with a circumference of three ri. The northeastern subordinate island Uyama has no houses. ○Hatoma Island is located to the north and belongs to Komi magiri. ○Aragusuku Island is located to the southwest. ○Yonaguni Island is located due west of Iriomote, far out at sea. The tidal currents in between are rapid. The island has a circumference of five ri and ten chō, and a height of seventy jō. It is the westernmost island of the Ryukyus and is adjacent to Taiwan Island (which Ryukyu people call Takasago). All of the above islands belong to Iriomote.

　Northern Islands　Located north and slightly east of the central islands. Ōshima is particularly large, with Tokushima, Erabu, etc. following in size. There are about ten islands in total, collectively called Ōshima. In ancient times they belonged to the Ryukyus, but after the Keichō era, they all came under the Shimazu clan, and now belong to Kagoshima Prefecture. ○Sometimes Ōshima, Kikai, and Tokushima are called the Three Islands.

Ōshima is called Ko-Ryukyu Island, and is the largest island after Okinawa among the islands.

【Text outside frame at top】Yonaguni is only twenty-five to twenty-six ri distant from Taiwan, and the islanders are still savage and fierce. Ships like those from Satsuma are said to never approach it.
