朝廷が既に勅命により藩国の華族とし、一等官の地位を授けたからには、名称・位号は確然と一定し、もはや疑う余地はないのである。ああ、今日の開明の盛んなることよ、千島・樺太から沖縄諸島に至るまで、南北万里にわたって皇国を環り擁し、ことごとく版図の中に入り、風化の及ぶところに窮極がない。次第に宇内を雄視する勢いがあることは、何と愉快なことではないか。たまたま琉球新誌が完成したので、書いて序とする。

一、去年、琉球の貢使が入朝した。天朝は特にその国を抜擢して藩とし、その主を藩王に冊封した。ここにおいて、皇国の府県制に更に一藩を加え、皇化は播かれて南海の隅にまで及んだ。私はその盛典を聞いて、手を打って喜ぶことに堪えられず、そこで公務の余暇を利用してついにこの篇を成した。自ら尽くすところは、あえて杜撰にしなかったとはいえ、脱誤のようなものは、読者にお願いしてこれを訂正していただきたい。

Since the Imperial Court has already issued an edict making Ryukyu a domain of the nobility and granted it first-class official status, the titles and ranks are now firmly established, leaving no room for doubt. Ah, how magnificent is today's enlightenment! From the Thousand Islands and Sakhalin to the Okinawan islands, spanning ten thousand ri north to south, all surrounding and embracing the Imperial nation, everything has entered into our territory, and the reach of civilization knows no bounds. We are gradually developing the momentum to survey the entire world with authority - is this not truly delightful? As the "New Record of Ryukyu" has just been completed, I write this as a preface.

Prefatory Remarks
1. Last year, tribute envoys from Ryukyu came to court. His Majesty specifically elevated that country to domain status and invested its ruler as domain lord. Thus, the Imperial nation's prefectural system gained one additional domain, and Imperial transformation spread to reach even the corners of the southern seas. When I heard of this grand ceremony, I could not contain my jubilation, so I used my spare time from official duties to finally complete this work. Although I dare say I did not approach my efforts carelessly, for errors such as omissions and mistakes, I ask readers to please make corrections.
1. The sections on geography, geology, climate, and products are translated from the American Commodore Perry's records of Ryukyu, as well as various original works on natural history and geography, cross-referenced with Minamoto Yoshimi's "Record of the Southern Islands," the Qing dynasty Zhou Huang's "Brief Record of Ryukyu," and Minamoto Tadahiko's "Unofficial History of Japan," with additional material on historical records and political systems.
