現代語訳

屋中では軒を開くことが多く、多くは横向きである。或いは東、或いは西に向く。庭院の中には小山、石、樹木を設ける。黄楊、烏木、檜、松の類である。必ず剪定して束ね、整然とする。或いは方形、或いは円形にし、層々として趣がある。

茸草は茵のようで、極めて細く軟らかい。寸ほどに結んで土と連ねて散らないようにする。山の上に満遍なく敷く。下には或いは小石池を置き、その中に魚を飼う。中に小石を立て、石の上に鉄蕉等の小木を植えて観賞用とする。

村の小道は皆極めて広く清潔である。多くは細葉の小竹を編んで屛籬とする。葉を剪って揃わせる。方正で緻密である。村落は皆このようである。寺院の前には或いは黄楊を列植する。剪定して方形に整える。葉が密で牆のようである。数十歩ほど続く。また冬青のような葉を持つ樹がある。六、七月に小さな白い花を咲かせる。梔子のような香りで極めて芬烈である。土名を十里香という。これも截って籬屛に作る。王宮に至ろうとするとき、道を挟んで数里続く。

米廩
米を蔵する廩も、地から四、五尺懸け上げる。遠く望むと草亭のようである。下に十六本の柱を施す。柱間の空いた所は人が通行できる。上は板閣とする。官倉は皆このようである。村民は或いは数家が共同で一つの亭を作り、その中に米を蔵する。日を分けて守望する。

英語訳

In houses, eaves are often opened, mostly facing sideways - either east or west. In courtyards, small hills, stones, and trees are arranged. These include boxwood, ebony, cypress, and pine. They are necessarily pruned and trimmed to be orderly, either square or round in shape, arranged in layers with aesthetic appeal.

The turf grass is like a cushion, extremely fine and soft. It is bound in inch-long sections and connected to the soil so it won't scatter. It is spread all over the tops of hills. Below, small stone pools are sometimes placed, with fish kept inside them. Small stones are erected in the center, and on the stones small trees like iron plantains are planted for ornamental purposes.

Village paths are all extremely wide and clean. They mostly weave fine-leafed small bamboo to make screen fences. The leaves are trimmed to be even. They are square, orderly, and dense. All villages are like this. In front of temples, boxwood is sometimes planted in rows. It is pruned into square shapes. The leaves are dense like walls, continuing for several dozen paces. There are also trees with leaves like winterberry holly. In the sixth and seventh months, they produce small white flowers. The fragrance is like gardenia, extremely strong and intense. The local name is "ten-li fragrance." These are also cut to make hedge screens. When approaching the royal palace, they line the road for several li.

Rice Granaries
The granaries for storing rice are also raised four to five shaku above the ground. Viewed from a distance, they look like grass pavilions. Below, sixteen pillars are installed. The empty spaces between pillars allow people to pass through. Above is a wooden platform structure. All official granaries are like this. Village people sometimes have several families jointly build one pavilion and store rice inside it. They take turns by days to guard and watch over it.
