革新しようと。衆を集めて議論した。思うに古来よりこのようであり、あるいは深い意味があって禁忌するところがあるのかもしれない。急に前の
制度を改めるのは不便であろう。ついに今に至るまでそのままにしている。市を通りかかって見るところ、すべてがそのとおりである。
市に入る貨物について、肩に担ぐ者はいない。大小重い物をすべて頭上に載せる。たとえ大甕や束ねた
薪でもすべて同様である。坂を登り峰を下りながら、首をまっすぐにして袖を引きずって歩く。偏って落とす者はいない。
土地の遊女が市中を行く時は、暑い月には衣服の襟の上に、また赤い絹を用いて襟元と脇の間に
縁取りをする。これによって識別する。旧録によると、良家の者が市に入る時は、手に一尺の布を持って自らを区別するという。今でも時々
これがある。
婦人が小児を抱く者は、ただ一手で小児の腰を操り、腕にして左右の腰の
上に騎座させる。見るところすべて同様である。

wanted to reform this practice. He gathered people and held discussions. They reasoned that it had been this way since ancient times, and perhaps there was some deep meaning or taboo involved. To suddenly change the former
system would be inconvenient. Thus it has remained unchanged to this day. Passing through the markets, everything one sees is exactly as described.
Regarding goods entering the market, there are no shoulder carriers. Large and small heavy items are all carried on the head. Even large jars and bundles of
firewood are all carried this way. Going up slopes and down ridges, they walk with heads upright and sleeves trailing, with no one dropping or tilting their loads.
Local courtesans walking through the markets, in hot months above their clothing collars, also use red silk to trim around the collar and armpit areas.
This serves to identify them. Old records say that when people from good families enter the market, they carry a foot-length cloth in their hands to distinguish themselves. Even now this occasionally
occurs.
Women carrying small children use only one hand to hold the child's waist, supporting them with their arm so the child rides seated on their left or right hip.
Everything observed is like this.
