　[観音竹]着￣テ＿レ 地￣ニ叢-生￣ス。葉￣ノ長尺-許。寛￣サ三-四-寸。紫-色。

現代語訳

【吉姑羅】一名火鳳。人家の牆上に多く之を植える。以て火を辟く。幹は覇王鞭草に似る。葉は慎火草に似る。花は黄菊に似る。亦紅きものもある。福禄木と名づく。

果には藕蔗西瓜青瓜木瓜橘《割書：数品》香橙金柑仏手茘枝竜眼葡萄桜桃楊梅覆盆子《割書：形は楊梅のようである》栗柿核桃枇杷梅《割書：小さく竜眼のようである》がある。異産には蕉実等がある。

【蕉実】芭蕉の結ぶ所。実を甘露と名づく。花は紫紅色。大きさは瓢のようである。日に一弁を開く。実を結ぶことは手のようである。五六指並び垂る。採って久しくして膚理は藕の最も嫩きものに似る。之を成熟させることができる。薯のようで甘い。

【阿呾呢】葉は長く旁らに刺がある。久しくして林を成し蔓を連ねる。堅利にして藩牆と為すべし。葉は蓆を造るべし。根は索を造るべし。花を開くものを男木と為す。花は白くて蓮の若し。弁は尖を合わせ左右に迸叠すること十余朶直上する。五椏蘂露れて杖のようである。長さ数寸。芳烈なること橘花のようである。女木は花無く実を結ぶ。大きさは瓜のようである。膚紋は釘を起こす。皆六稜。食べることができる。云うには即ち波羅密の別種である。粤東にも亦之がある。鳳梨と名づく。

【櫧子】一名芝（シイ）。子は橡栗のようで小さい。山中処処に之がある。一名椎子。

竹には苦竹猫竹虎斑竹鳳竹竿竹箒竹烏竹大竿竹矢竹竻竹がある。異産に観音竹がある。

【観音竹】地に着いて叢生する。葉の長さ尺許。寛さ三四寸。紫色。

英語訳

**Jikogura**: Also called fire phoenix. People often plant this on house walls to ward off fire. The stem resembles the euphorbia (overlord whip grass). The leaves resemble fire-prevention grass. The flowers resemble yellow chrysanthemums. There are also red varieties, called fortune and prosperity wood.

Among fruits there are lotus root, sugar cane, watermelon, cucumber, papaya, tangerines *[marginal note: several varieties]*, fragrant oranges, kumquats, Buddha's hand citron, lychees, longan, grapes, cherries, Chinese bayberries, raspberries *[marginal note: shaped like Chinese bayberries]*, chestnuts, persimmons, walnuts, loquats, plums *[marginal note: small like longan]*. Among exotic products there are banana fruits and others.

**Banana Fruit**: What the banana plant produces. The fruit is called sweet dew. The flowers are purple-red in color. The size is like a gourd. One petal opens each day. The fruit formation is like a hand. Five or six fingers hang down in a row. After harvesting and waiting for some time, the flesh texture resembles the most tender lotus root. It can be ripened. It is like sweet potato but sweet.

**Ateni**: The leaves are long with thorns on the sides. Over time they form forests with connecting vines. They are strong and sharp, suitable for making hedges and walls. The leaves can be used to make mats. The roots can be used to make rope. Those that bloom are called male trees. The flowers are white like lotus. The petals converge at the tip, spreading left and right in layers, more than ten clusters growing straight up. The five-branched stamens are exposed like staffs. Several inches long. Fragrant and intense like orange blossoms. Female trees have no flowers but bear fruit. The size is like melons. The skin texture forms nail-like protrusions. All have six ridges. Edible. It is said to be a different variety of jackfruit. Guangdong also has them. They are called pineapple.

**Chinquapin**: Also called shii. The nuts are like acorns but smaller. They are found everywhere in the mountains. Also called椎子 (tsuishi).

Among bamboos there are bitter bamboo, cat bamboo, tiger-spotted bamboo, phoenix bamboo, pole bamboo, broom bamboo, black bamboo, large pole bamboo, arrow bamboo, and 竻 bamboo. Among exotic varieties there is Guanyin bamboo.

**Guanyin Bamboo**: Grows in clusters on the ground. Leaves about one shaku long. Width three to four sun. Purple colored.
