ロシア人の種類でもなく、別に一種の人物である。とはいえ、国中に似た人もなく、日本の蝦夷土人のようであるという。ところが近年、ロシア人が行って従わせ、国名を改めて「アナアテリスコイ」と言う。この国に大きな川があり「アナアテリ」と言う。この川の名によって国名としたと言われる。国の産物に「ヲレニ」という山獣がある。この獣の皮は実に良質な毛皮である。この国より北方の地は小島続きではあるが、極寒の地にして四季を通じて氷海であると言われる。それゆえ通船することができない。北極出地（北緯）六十七度に及ぶと言われる。この国の人は山での狩猟を生業とすると言われる。

そのため犬を多く飼っておいて、山狩りの時に連れて行き、追い狩りの手伝いをさせ、また寒い夜に山中で寝るときは犬とともに臥すのである。「ヲレニ」の大きさは鹿ほどである。その皮を、私がロシア人と九十日ほど同居した時によく見た。その獣の角でロシア人が細工した匙（さじ）一本をロシア人より貰って今も所持している。白犀角に似た物である。ロシア人はすべて国の風習に従って、事業を大いに巧みにすることを誉れとする。とりわけ新たな事業を開くためには一命をかけ、開国・草創の功績を立てると見受けられる。すでに私と同宿した「シメヲントユヘイシエヨ」は天明五年乙巳（きのとみ）に

Nevertheless, there are none among them who resemble each other [in variety], and they are said to resemble the Ezo native peoples of Japan. However, in recent years, the Russians went there and subjugated them, renamed the country "Anaaterisukoi." In this country there is a great river called "Anateri," and it is said the country was named after this river. Among the country's products there is a mountain beast called "Oreni." The hide of this beast is truly a fine fur. The lands to the north of this country, though connected by small islands, are said to be lands of extreme cold, with seas frozen year-round throughout all four seasons. Therefore, navigation there is impossible. It is said to extend to approximately sixty-seven degrees of north polar altitude (north latitude). The people of this country are said to make their livelihood by hunting in the mountains.

For this reason they keep many dogs, taking them along during mountain hunts to assist in driving game, and on cold nights when sleeping in the mountains, they lie down together with their dogs. The "Oreni" is about the size of a deer. I had a good look at its hide when I lived together with Russians for approximately ninety days. I received from a Russian one spoon (*saji*) crafted from the horn of that beast, which I still possess to this day. It is something resembling white rhinoceros horn. The Russians, in all things, follow their national customs and consider it an honor to excel greatly in their enterprises. In particular, it appears that for the purpose of opening up new ventures, they stake their very lives and establish the achievement of pioneering and founding new lands.
