[Right folio] (Continued from previous page) The accounts vary considerably. This was obtained from a Russian book called "Sesukahiyaourahi ya" (unknown). I had this book read and annotated by an "Ishuyo" (interpreter). As this is land I have not personally visited, I cannot be fully certain, but I record it here as reference for future journeys. On the Arrival of Foreign Ships The country called "Kamusasuka" (Kamchatka) is contiguous with Russian territory and lies at the far eastern extremity. However, it is in origin the Ezo territory of Japan. In the year 1643 of the Russian calendar, a native of that country called "Korofuru" (Kozyrevsky?) came to this land and was the first to open it up. By the year Tenmei Hinoe-Uma (the sixth year of Tenmei, 1786), it has been one hundred and forty-seven years since then. [Left folio] After that, the natives of Kamusasuka (Kamchatka) submitted to Russia — the covenant having been made during Japan's Kyōhō era (1716–1736) — and it remains so to this day. The sea to the east of the islands of Eastern Ezo, stretching from this northern region, is named "Seiuaruoosto" (unknown), and the sea to the west is named "Henshunmōnyō" (Penzhinskaya Bay?). Thereafter, government vessels came and went, and the development of enterprise flourished greatly. There is a great river that flows into this "Henshunmōnyō" (Penzhinskaya Bay?), and its mouth forms a great harbor called "Wohotsuka" (Okhotsk). This is the place where a merchant named Takeuchi Tokubei from Sai Village in Nanbu, Ōshū, was cast ashore during Japan's Kyōhō era (1716–1736). This is described in detail in the preceding chapter. Now, along the shoreline between "Kamusasuka" (Kamchatka) and "Wohotsuka" (Okhotsk),
