[Right folio] (Continued from previous page) Feeling unable to forget this kindness, he entrusted a letter from the country of "Toichi" (Deutschland/Germany) to some Dutch merchant vessel that had been crossing to Japan over the years, requesting them to carry it. The Nagasaki Magistrate (Bugyō) of that time received it and reported the matter to the Kantō (the Shogunate in Edo), whereupon instructions were issued, and a certain interpreter (tsūji) translated it. It turned out to be a letter of gratitude addressed to the lord of Awa Province. The name of the shipmaster was said to be "Maukutsuatekuruhanhenokoro" — and this person was "Ausu." At the time when the Russian government vessel was seized at the harbor of "Seakatsuka" (Sekaafuka), there were two shipmasters aboard: "Itsukoirofu" (Isokoiufu) and "Baserófu" (Khaselov?). "Itsukoirofu" was a person who greatly sought to restrain the violence and unlawful seizure committed by "Ausu," while for "Haserófu," it had long been in accordance with the Tsar's orders to traverse the islands of Ezo [Left folio] and cross the eastern shores of Japan. Therefore, considering this a fortunate fulfillment of his wishes, he ultimately unfurled the sails and set out. However, when they anchored at "Shimoshiri Island" to replenish their stocks of firewood and fresh water, the argument between "Ausu" and "Itsukoirou" escalated, and in the end, "Itsukoirofu" was abandoned on the beach and they set sail without him. It is said that "Itsukoirofu" received the care of the native inhabitants of "Shimoshiri Island" and was able to return to his homeland. When the details of these events were reported in full to the royal capital, it is said that he was rewarded and commended for his loyalty and the hardships he had endured. As for "Haserófu," he endured the violent misconduct of "Ausu" out of a sense of national duty, and crossing the eastern and southern seas— (Continued on next page)
