(Continued from previous page) —there are also a great many Ezo dwellings. However, few natives travel through the area, and consequently it is said that few products come out of it. This vicinity is called "Northern Karafuto." Now, furthermore, the climate of this island is said to be equivalent to that of the island where Matsumae is located (Ezo, present-day Hokkaido). The latitude ranges from forty-six degrees to forty-eight or forty-nine degrees north. As for the natives' livelihoods and catches, those near "Sōya" transport their goods to "Sōya" for trade, while those near Sandan transport their goods to Sandan for trade. In terms of customs as well, the natives who trade with Sandan have adopted the ways of Sandan, whereas those who trade with "Sōya" remain in the manner of Japanese Ezo natives. The customs of this land are such that every household keeps many dogs; during the summer they use them to pull the towlines of boats,

and during the winter they use them to pull sleds—employing dogs just as one would use oxen or horses. When winter arrives and the snowbound season comes, if fishing and hunting prove insufficient and food supplies run out, it becomes the practice to use those same kept dogs as food. The expanse of this island surpasses that of the island where Matsumae is located (Hokkaido), making it a great island indeed. It is far larger than the Japanese mainland islands. Compared with the island where Matsumae is located, this Karafuto (the western island) is likely nearly three times as large.
On the Matter of the Land of Sandan
In the year Tenmei Hinoe-Uma (1786), a man called Ōishi Ippei—of hereditary stipend lineage and an old friend of mine—upon arriving at the place on Karafuto Island called "Ōhotomari," found that Sandan people had crossed the sea to this location. Among them were three persons of leading rank,
