（その水の味と匂いを）尋ねてみると、蝦夷地に「樺（カバ）」という木がある。この木を、生木のまま幹の皮に横に切り傷をつけると、直ちに漆のように樹液が出てくる。これを採取して飲む。これは土人（アイヌの人々）が行っていることである。その木の樹液は、かの島（チリホイ島）の水の匂いに似ているという。そこで、その樺の木の樹液を土人に命じて採取させ試してみたところ、良い梨のような香りがして甘かった。また江戸の酒に似ていると思われた。それゆえ、かの島の水の味わいも、（これによって）想像・推量した次第である。
オムシャのこと
光格天皇（俊明廟）の御代に、蝦夷国境の見分（視察）の御用として、担当の役人両名が蝦夷地へ巡行した。すでに「クナシリ」島に至ったところ、

アイヌの習慣として「オムシャ」というものが催された。このオムシャとは、高貴な賓客を丁重にもてなす饗応の儀式のことである。さて、アイヌの土人の中に「乙名」と「小使」という役職がある。日本の役人に謁見する際にオムシャを催すことが定例となっている。この時、日本からの土産物を与え、酒をアイヌ人に振る舞うことがその土地の定例となっている。このとき、松前在住の島々のうち、「アッケン（厚岸）」の小使・シモチの「ワカマウ」の乙名・「ションコ」、および「クナシリ（国後）」島近辺の島の乙名「サンキチ」、脇乙名「キツノヘ」等を呼び出した。これらの者はいずれも「クナシリ」島（において……）

In seeking to understand (the taste and smell of that water), I note that in Ezo there is a tree called "kaba" (birch). When a horizontal cut is made in the bark of a living tree, a sap flows out immediately, like lacquer. The indigenous people collect and drink this. The sap of this tree is said to resemble the smell of the water of that island (Chirihoi). So I had the indigenous people collect some of the birch sap to try it, and found it had a pleasant pear-like fragrance and was sweet. It also seemed to resemble sake from Edo. Based on this, I formed my conjecture and estimate of what the taste of that island's water must be like.
On the Subject of "Omusha"
During the reign of Emperor Kōkaku (referred to here as Shunmei-byō, the Shunmei Mausoleum), two officials were dispatched to conduct a survey of the borders of Ezo territory. Upon reaching

the island of "Kunashiri," an Ainu custom called "Omusha" was performed. This Omusha is a ceremony of solemn entertainment and hospitality offered to distinguished guests. Among the Ainu people, there are roles called "otona" (elder/headman) and "kozukai" (messenger/attendant). It is customary practice for the Omusha to be performed when receiving Japanese officials in audience. On this occasion, Japanese gifts were presented and sake was served to the Ainu, as is the established custom of the land. At this time, the following were summoned: the kozukai of "Akkeshi" from among the islands under Matsumae's jurisdiction; the otona "Wakamau" of Shimochi; "Shonko"; and from the vicinity of "Kunashiri" Island, the otona "Sankichi" and the assistant otona "Kitsunohe," among others.
