When I went ahead to the various islands, the *otona* (village headman) of "Akkeshi," located on the eastern Ezo lands under Matsumae jurisdiction, named "Ikotoika," boarded a small vessel and set sail from "Akkeshi" on the tenth day of the third month of Tenmei 6 (1786, the year of the Fire Horse), arriving on the fifth day of the fifth month of the same year at a place called "Sharushamu" in the interior of "Etorou" (Iturup) Island. The *otona* of this place was called "Maukaaino." This person was a man of great standing and renown throughout the island, deep in wisdom and prudence, and greatly feared and revered by the indigenous people. At this time, this "Ikotoi" was his son-in-law, and so in welcome, a feast was prepared with home-brewed cloudy sake (*doburoku*), and a drinking banquet was held between the son-in-law and the father-in-law. After a short while, the chief retainer stepped forward and addressed the son-in-law Ikotoi, to which Ikotoi replied "*Chāarau*" — a formal, ceremonious manner of speech used by the Ainu. The words spoken at this time were entirely different from everyday speech, and were utterly incomprehensible to my ears; I could do nothing but watch intently. After this, they drew their seats close together, and the father-in-law and son-in-law pressed forehead to forehead, each using both hands to hold the other's ears — each pressing the other's ears — and in utter silence they wept with deep emotion for a considerable while.
