その旨を（松前へ）言い送った。その場所の請負主人（うけおいしゅじん）は、あれこれと思い巡らせた末、金メッキの金付きの挟箱（はさみばこ）を送り届けた。この箱の内側は金光紙（きんひかりがみ）で張ってあるため、内も外も金色に輝いていた。長右衛門のもとにこの箱が届いたので、急ぎその旨を彼の乙名（おとな）に知らせた。乙名はユタカ（某）と対面して言うには、「このたび松前表より良き器物が届いた。そのため呼び申し上げた」と言った。ユタカがその品を見て大いに喜び、「天地が開けて以来、このような珍しいものはよもやあるまい」と思い、勇み進んで交易をした。この取引において、干魚類の品々をその代価として差し出し、その挟箱を受け取り得たのであった。かしこにて

（ユタカは）自宅に持ち帰った。自宅において、その挟箱をつくづくと眺めて思うには、「今まで器物も多く持っているとはいえ、試（ため）すに類（たぐい）のない器物である」とて大いに喜び、珍しい器・珍宝を求め得たという高慢（こうまん）の意（こころ）が生じ、これを広めたいと思い、にわかに濁酒（にごりざけ）を造って、近村・近郷の乙名・長夷（おさえびす）たちを招き、その器物を披露する酒宴を始めた。その時、かの挟箱を持ち出して濁酒をたっぷりと盛り、座敷の中央に置いた。来客の乙名や蝦夷たちもこの器物を見て肝に銘じ、「古今に比類なき珍器である」と甚（はなは）だ賞翫（しょうがん）して誉め讃えた。酒宴もいよいよ終わらんとする頃には、かの挟箱も空になっていた。

He sent word of the matter to Matsumae. The contractor (*ukeoi*) who held the rights to that fishing ground, after much deliberation, sent a gold-plated lacquerwork *hasami-bako* (a lidded ceremonial box). The interior of this box was lined with gold-foil paper, so that both inside and out it gleamed with a golden radiance. When the box arrived at Chōemon's residence, he promptly sent word of it to the *otona* headman. The *otona* came to meet a man named Yutaka and said: "A fine utensil has arrived this time from Matsumae. That is why I have summoned you." Yutaka, upon seeing the item, was enormously delighted, and thinking "Since heaven and earth were first opened, surely there can never have been such a wondrous thing as this," he eagerly and enthusiastically agreed to trade for it. As payment in this exchange, he offered various kinds of dried fish, and thus obtained the *hasami-bako*. And there,

he carried it back to his own home. At home, he gazed at the *hasami-bako* long and intently, thinking: "Though I have possessed many fine utensils until now, testing them against this, there is truly nothing that can be compared to it." He rejoiced greatly, and a feeling of pride welled up in him at having obtained such a rare and treasured object. Wishing to show it off to others, he hastily brewed some *nigorizake* (unrefined sake) and invited the *otona* headmen and elder Ainu (*osa-ebisu*) of the surrounding villages and districts, and commenced a banquet at which this utensil would be unveiled. He then brought out the *hasami-bako*, filled it to the brim with *nigorizake*, and set it in the center of the gathering room. The visiting *otona* and Ainu, upon seeing this utensil, were deeply struck with admiration, declaring it "a rare and peerless treasure, unrivaled in all of history," and praised it with the utmost enthusiasm. And by the time the banquet drew to a close, the *hasami-bako* had been emptied clean.
