（挟箱の）内側に張ってあった金光紙がすっかり剥げ落ちてしまっていた。これを見て、その場に居合わせた長夷をはじめ大勢の者が大いに憤りを覚え、気の毒に思った。「莫大な代物（しろもの）と交易したのに、このような偽物を以て我々の産物を奪い取ったのであろう」と怒り、すぐさま運上小屋に行き、通詞（つうじ）の長右衛門に会って、ユタカが言うには、「あの珍器はまったくの偽物ではないか。濁酒を盛ったところ、内側がすっかり剥げてしまった」と言った。ここにおいて長右衛門はこれを聞いて大いに困り、「まったくもって偽物ではない。あの器物は衣類を入れる箱であって、水物（みずもの）を入れる箱ではない」ということを懸命に詫び説明したところ、ようやく納得させたとのことである。

莫大な代物を出して交易した珍器への思い込みの違いから生じたことであって、ただひたすら「偽物にはめられ、欺かれた」と凝り固まった片意地（かたいじ）を領解（りょうげ）させたことは、まことに思いやられることである。そもそも蝦夷の器物などは酒宴にのみ用いるのみで、それ以外に用いるべき品（しな）がなく、いまだ人道（じんどう）が開けていないので、器財（きざい）を入れることがない。

The gold-foil paper lining the interior of the *hasami-bako* had peeled away entirely. Seeing this, the elder Ainu (*osa-ebisu*) present and the large crowd of onlookers were filled with great indignation and dismay. "We traded an enormous amount of goods for this, and yet they have used such a fraudulent item to rob us of our produce!"—so they raged, and immediately went to the *unjō-goya* (the trading post) and met with the interpreter (*tsūji*) Chōemon. Yutaka said to him: "That rare treasure is surely a counterfeit. When we filled it with *nigorizake*, the inside peeled away completely." At this, Chōemon was greatly troubled upon hearing the account, and earnestly explained and apologized: "It is by no means a fraudulent item. That utensil is a box for storing clothing—it is not a box intended to hold liquids." After much pleading, he was finally able to bring them to an understanding, it is said.

The whole affair arose from a misunderstanding about the nature of the rare utensil for which they had traded such an enormous amount of goods—and yet the stubborn conviction that they had been tricked and deceived by a fraud was deeply entrenched. To have finally brought them around to understanding is something that truly calls for empathy and reflection. In general, the utensils of the Ainu are used solely for banquets and drinking, and there are no items among them suited for other purposes; and since the ways of civilization (*jindō*) have not yet opened to them, they have no need to store goods in containers.
