天明丙午の年（1786年）、蝦夷国の境界見分の御用に属して、江戸本町の苫屋久兵衛という者の手船・神通丸の沖船頭・太兵衛の采配によって松前に着船し、そこから東蝦夷地のニシヘシへ渡海したのである。蝦夷地東海の船路をよく知っている者を松前家の選びによって定め、松前唐津町の者で道先役の次郎兵衛が乗り組み、「ニシヘツ」という大きな川に着船した。このニシヘツは、例年、秋の彼岸になると川の源の方へ鮭が夥しく遡るのであった。私はその役係であったので、彼らに下知して、同年八月十七日昼七

ツ時（午後0時頃）頃に引いた網に、鮭が三千尺（匹）ほど掛かった。また翌十八日朝六ツ時（午前6時頃）に引いた網には、大きく掛かった中から悪いものを除き、よく選んで九十七束あった。一束とは百（匹）のことである。「去る」とは、優れて〔大きすぎる〕ものを除くことであり、優れて大きなものを除き、中くらいのものを揃えて良とする故である。中くらいのものを揃えて船積みにするのである。大船には概ね五万尺（匹）以上を積むことを、松前家の定令（規則）としているのである。
概ね五、七日のうちに捕るのは、これが猟産の豊かなことの証拠である。

**On Fishing and Hunting**
In the year Tenmei Hinoe-uma (1786), attached to the official duty of surveying the borders of Ezo, I boarded a vessel belonging to one Tomaya Kyūbei of Edo Honchō, called the *Jintsūmaru*, under the command of the offshore ship's captain Taibei, and arrived at Matsumae. From there, I crossed by sea to Nishiheshi in the eastern Ezo lands. A man well acquainted with the sea routes along the eastern coast of Ezo was selected by the Matsumae domain, namely Jirōbei of Matsumae Karatsu-chō, who served as the route guide and boarded the vessel. We arrived at the mouth of the great river called "Nishihetsu." At Nishihetsu, every year when the autumnal equinox period arrives, salmon swim upstream in great numbers toward the headwaters of the river. As I was the official in charge, I directed the men, and on the seventeenth day of the eighth month of that same year, at around the seventh hour of the afternoon (approximately noon),

some three thousand salmon were caught in the net that was drawn. Furthermore, in the net drawn the following morning of the eighteenth day at the sixth hour (approximately 6 a.m.), there was a great catch, from which the inferior fish were removed and carefully selected, yielding ninety-seven bundles. One bundle constitutes one hundred fish. "Removing" refers to setting aside those that are exceptionally large; by removing those that are outstandingly large and gathering together those of medium size, the quality is considered good. The medium-sized fish are gathered together and loaded onto the ship. It is established as a regulation of the Matsumae domain that large vessels carry a load of approximately fifty thousand fish or more.
That this quantity can be caught within roughly five to seven days is proof of the abundance of the hunting and fishing yields.
