つ時分に引き揚げた網に、鮭三千尺ほどが掛かっていた。また、翌十八日の朝六つ時に引き揚げた網には、大量に掛かっていた中から、出来の悪いものを除き、よく選り分けて九十七束あった。一束とは百尾のことである。「去る」とは、とりわけ小さいものを除き、とりわけ大きなものも除き、中ほどのものを揃えて良品とするためである。中ほどのものを揃えて船積みにするのである。大船には、およそ五万尾以上を積むことを松前家の定めとしているのである。
おおよそ五、七日のうちに捕れるのは、猟・漁の産物が豊かである証拠である。

**On Fishing and Hunting**
In the year Tenmei Hinoe-Uma (1786), in service of an inspection mission to survey the borders of the Ezo lands, I boarded a vessel called the *Jintsūmaru*, belonging to one Tomaya Kyūbei of Edo Honchō, under the command of the offshore ship's captain Tahei, and arrived at Matsumae. From there, I crossed the sea to "Nisheheshi" in the Eastern Ezo lands. A man well acquainted with the sea routes along the eastern coast of the Ezo lands was to be selected by the Matsumae domain; accordingly, a man from Matsumae Karatsu-machi, serving as navigator (michisaki-yaku) named Jirōbei, joined the crew, and we arrived by boat at a great river called "Nishehets." At this "Nishehets," every year when the autumnal equinox arrives, salmon come swimming upstream toward the headwaters of the river in great numbers. As I was in charge of this duty, I gave instructions to the men, and on the seventeenth day of the eighth month of that same year, at around the seventh hour of the afternoon,

the nets that were pulled in yielded approximately three thousand salmon. Furthermore, in the nets pulled in at the sixth hour of the morning of the following eighteenth day, after removing those of poor quality from among the great catch and carefully selecting the good ones, there were ninety-seven bundles. One bundle consists of one hundred fish. "Removing" means discarding those that are exceptionally small, discarding those that are exceptionally large, and selecting those of middling size as the best quality. Those of middling size are gathered together and loaded onto the ship. It is the established rule of the Matsumae domain that large ships load no fewer than approximately fifty thousand fish.
That such quantities can be caught within roughly five to seven days is proof of how abundant the yields of hunting and fishing are.
