これは大きな（重大な）説であり、私の浅い考えでは及びがたいことである。ただ、そこの岸が悪い（難所である）ということだけは分かる。これについて種々の説があり、いまだ確かな根拠のあることは知れていない。いずれにしても、大切なことと思われる。機会があっても時を得なければ、是非の議論もできない。
願わくは、もう一度「エトロウ島」へ渡海して、かの「イシエヨ」が今もなお滞留していると聞けば、直接対面して、五ヶ年以前の様子なども糺し聞き、南北アメリカへ渡海したという、かの九艘の大船どもの安否は、きっと「イシエヨ」へ「オホツカの役人よりも通じられた……」

This is a matter of great significance, and it is difficult for my humble understanding to fully grasp. All I can say is that the shoreline there is treacherous. There are various theories about this, and as yet no well-founded account is known. In any case, it seems to me to be a matter of utmost importance. Even if the opportunity presents itself, without the right timing, no meaningful debate about its merits can be had.
It is my earnest hope that I might once more cross the sea to the island of "Etorou" (*Iturup*), and — having heard that the one called "Ishieyo" still remains there — meet with him directly to inquire about the circumstances of five years prior, and also to learn whether the fate of those nine great vessels that reportedly sailed to North and South America had indeed been communicated to "Ishieyo" by the officials of Okhotsk…
