　　松前より西の方に日本道おおよそ三十里ほどにして、見市という村がある。この所に代々岩之助（古くは蝦夷人にして真名はイワシノシケといい、すなわち乙名である）という百姓がいる。平日は日本人の野郎髷・鬢の髪型であるが、冬になると月代を剃らず蝦夷の姿となり、正月七日に領主へ吉例として出向く。領主の書院の前庭に荒薦を敷いて、そこに座らせられ、領主より濁酒を賜るのである。これは蝦夷の遺風である。松前の城下……

　　　　　General Discussion of Matsumae

　　Approximately thirty ri to the west of Matsumae along the Japanese road, there is a village called Miichi. In this place there has lived, generation after generation, a farmer called Iwanosuké (in former times an Ainu person whose true name was Iwashinoshike, meaning he was an *otona*, i.e., a village headman). On ordinary days he wears his hair in the Japanese *yarō-bin* style, but when winter comes, he stops shaving his *sakayaki* (the shaved portion of the crown), takes on the appearance of an Ainu, and on the seventh day of the New Year presents himself before the domain lord as a customary auspicious observance. A rough rush mat (*arakomо*) is laid out in the front garden of the lord's reception hall, and he is made to sit upon it, whereupon he is presented with unrefined sake (*nigorizake*) by the domain lord.
