【夕霧】「起介（きすけ）どん、それ、足から血が出るよ。どうした？」
【ねず（下男）】「台のものの松の釘を踏み抜きいたしました。」
【夕霧】「ヲヤ、あぶねへ。」
（と、屋敷へ入り、上にかけてあった赤銅臭い白湯を一口飲んでみてこぼし、火鉢の中をかき回して）
「こら、そらねさん、下に置き火がてきたら、ちっともってきな。」
【そらね】「アイ。」（と、下へ行く。）
【夕霧】（あたりを見まわし、次の間の戸棚の戸を四、五寸開けて顔を差し入れ）「さぞ気づまりでおざりんしょう。」
（と言うところへ、遣り手の声がするゆえ、びっくりして戸棚の戸をびっしゃりと閉め、ほどなく遣り手が来る。）
【遣り手】「おいらん、お早うございます。」
【夕霧】（戸棚に身を寄せかけて、さあらぬ体（てい）で）「見なんし、いい天気でおざんすねへ。」
【遣り手】「何さ、くもっておりますものを。きのうはもう大いくたびれましたよ。」
【夕霧】（ようやく落ち着いて）「ほんに、堀の内さんはにぎやかでおさんしたかへ？」
【遣り手】「アイ、納め手ぬぐひはすぐに懸けさせて参りましたよ。」
【夕霧】「そりゃあ、もうおかたじけなふおざんした。モシ、ちょっと見なんし、夜舟（よふね）さんの寝たなりを。」
【遣り手】「ほんにねえ。」

*(In the corridor, the attendant boy "Nezu" is lining up many lanterns and sweeping.)*
**[Yūgiri]** "Kisuke-don, look — your foot is bleeding! What happened?"
**[Nezu (the boy servant)]** "I trod on a pine nail sticking out of the platform."
**[Yūgiri]** "Oh my, that's dangerous!"
*(She enters the inner rooms, takes a sip of the slightly metallic-tasting hot water that had been sitting over the brazier, then spits it out, and stirs up the coals in the brazier.)*
"Hey, Sorane — when the coals downstairs are ready, bring some up here."
**[Sorane]** "Yes, ma'am." *(Goes downstairs.)*
**[Yūgiri]** *(Looking around, she opens the door of the built-in cabinet in the adjacent room four or five inches and pokes her face in.)* "You must be feeling awfully cramped in there."
*(Just as she says this, the voice of the *yarite* [manageress] is heard approaching. Startled, Yūgiri snaps the cabinet door shut with a bang. The *yarite* arrives shortly after.)*
**[Yarite]** "Good morning, my Lady."
**[Yūgiri]** *(Leaning nonchalantly against the cabinet, affecting an air of innocence.)* "My, isn't it lovely weather, isn't it?"
**[Yarite]** "Lovely? It's completely overcast! I must say, yesterday quite wore me out."
**[Yūgiri]** *(Finally composing herself.)* "Indeed — was it lively over at Horinochi's?"
**[Yarite]** "Yes, I made sure the *osame-tenugui* [ceremonial farewell towels] were handed out straight away."
**[Yūgiri]** "Oh, how very thoughtful of you. Now — do take a look at the way Yofune is still sleeping!"
**[Yarite]** "Well, I never..."
