The medicine merchant has tried various approaches, but it seems he is, after all, a man of means when it comes to the fee itself — yet stingy with bedding and clothing expenses. Meanwhile, in the room next door, the resident courtesan and her attendants appear to have only just woken up, and are gathered before their mirror primping and grooming. Into this scene enters the kamuro [child attendant] Tsunaji, coming up from below-stairs. She wears her standard-issue cotton wadded coat, dirty and worn to a dark greasy shine, with a narrow sash dyed in the dull, muddy colour of itajime resist-dyeing. She rubs her eyes, her face still heavy with sleep.)*
