【車井】「そんなら文を書くうち、持って来てくだせへ。後生だよ。」
（さて下には地をかきにして文字を藍にて「吉田屋」と筆太に染め出したる暖簾を半分まき上げてあり、照らしの牛臺には禿がおちそうに腰をかけ、金柑の鬼灯（ほうずき）を持ち遊びにしながら髪を結ってもらっている。もっとも禿の髪は男の髪結いが結うなり。）
【髪結い・吉平】「コレ、じっとして居ねへか。手前のようにいごくものはねへ。」
（そばに禿、待って居る。）
【禿】「吉平どん、おれうはもう奴島田はよして、針打ちにいってくだせへ。花魁がそういわしった。」
【今一人の禿】「あのつぎはおれだよ。」
【今一人の禿】「あつかましい。何、きさまなものか。おれが先へ来たは。」
【吉平】「此の子どもいらァ、ようめへ。朝々いがみやって、ちっと静かにしねへが。」

On the illuminated ox-stand [a kind of display stand or lantern platform], a kamuro [child attendant] sits perched precariously on the edge, fiddling with a kumquat or a physalis [hōzuki] as a plaything while having her hair dressed. It should be noted that a kamuro's hair is always done by a male hairdresser.)*
**[Hairdresser, Kippei]** "Now, will you please hold still! There's nobody who wriggles about like you do."
