**[Fishmonger]** "Why, sir, these are fine horse mackerel [aji] right here. You can't get this kind of length unless they're from Namamugi — nowhere else."
**[Kizaemon]** "Bunsuke, will that fish do for the soup?"
**[Bunsuke]** "Yes. Now, all these raw shellfish here are female shells, aren't they. And this flatfish [jibirame] — that's a fine one."
**[Fishmonger]** "Fine fish indeed, sir."
**[Genshichi]** "Master, please do take a little of the fresh sea cucumber [namako] as well."
**[Fishmonger]** "This sea cucumber here is from Enokidō, it is."
**[Bunsuke]** "Move the cart a little further in, would you."
**[Kizaemon]** "Why is fish so expensive when there's no shortage of it?"
**[Fishmonger]** "It's on account of the rough weather we've had, sir — so I'm afraid it doesn't come cheap."

And so, as the Hour of the Dog [i.e., around ten in the morning], arrives, upstairs in Yūgiri's parlour, all the newcomers are rising. The head clerk Kawatake is wearing a medium-pattern [chūgata] kimono in purple with a family crest — the kind of small-sleeved robe suited to a girl of about fifteen or sixteen — with a flat-quilted sash [hirakuke] in black-and-white [kogohaku], and draped over this a heavily patterned kimono in a "gathered dust" [kuro-chiri no atsumari] design, worn slightly aged. In her hair, she has a boxwood comb stuck in at a precarious angle, as though she had simply swept up her dishevelled morning hair and thrust it in on the spot. She is the chief newcomer of this house's lower tier, and quite a striking-looking woman at that. Yet, with the new year drawing near, she is the sort of woman one would like to warn: "Mind you figure out where to retire gracefully before it's too late." Then there is Ashikano, in a long-sleeved kimono [furisode]...
