（夜舟〔よふね〕は、みな藍びろうどの油屋の雑巾のような布子〔ぬのこ〕、細帯、襟はまっ黒。白粉は所々に雪の消え残ったるがごとし。夕霧は、無心をいって遣わした客のところから来た返事の文を読んでいる。川竹は自身掃除をしかけ、箒を持って後ろからのぞいている。）

【夜舟】「ゆうべ見えなかった歌がるたが夜着の袖から出んしたよ。」
【（女）】「それ見なんし。」
【川竹】「おめへがたァ、きりきり湯へ入って来て、床の間やれんじ（＝連子窓）をふきなよ。何もかもごみだらけになっているは、いつてもあそこらが臭らしいよ。」
（と言いながら、しかみの灰の固まりを拾い出し、文がらを引き裂き、火鉢の縁をふいている所へ、禿〔かむろ〕の雪の（屋）が来る。）
【川竹】「雪のや、湯に誰がいるか見てきや。」
【雪の】「今見てめえりいしたが、外の人はだれもおりいせん。」
【川竹】「花魁〔おいらん〕、お出なんせんかえ。」
【夕霧】「わたしはもうちっとして参りましょう。ちっと今考えていることがございんす。」
【川竹】「これ、葦鹿〔あしかの〕さん、わっちが湯へ行って来るうち、花魁の膳もわっちが膳もしておこうし、お茶も沸かしておこうかし。」

"night boat"] is wearing, like all the others, a padded cotton garment [nunoko] in indigo velvet as worn-looking as an oil shop's cleaning rag, with a narrow sash, and a collar that is jet black. Her face powder remains only in patches, like snow that has not quite melted away. Yūgiri is reading a reply letter that has arrived from a patron to whom she sent a request for money [mushin]. Kawatake has started cleaning on her own, holding a broom and peering over from behind.)*
*(Note: The appearance of these two women here is the very picture of a courtesan's idle, unguarded private self.)*
**[Yofune]** "The poem card [uta-garuta] that went missing last night has turned up from inside the sleeve of my nightrobe [yogi]."
**[(Woman)]** "There you have it, you see."
**[Kawatake]** "Now you lot — get yourselves off to the bath and be quick about it, then come back and wipe down the alcove and the lattice window. Everything is covered in dust — I've always said that corner smells dreadful."
*(Saying this, she picks out a lump of compressed ash from the smoking tray, tears up some scraps of old letters, and is wiping the rim of the brazier when the kamuro [young attendant girl] Yukino arrives.)*

**[Yukino]** "I just had a look, and there's no one from outside in there at all."
**[Kawatake]** "Oiran [Mistress Yūgiri], won't you come out now?"
**[Yūgiri]** "I'll be along in just a little while. There's something I'm thinking about just now."
**[Kawatake]** "Now then, Ashikano — while I'm away at the bath, would you set out the oiran's meal tray and mine as well, and perhaps put the kettle on for tea?"
