「それから、あの、まあまあ、それをきりきりしなんしへ。雪のや、糠〔ぬか〕を入れて、浴衣を持って、あゆびや（＝足拭い）、そしてから、あの、ほうぼうへ行って書付〔かきつけ〕を取ってきや。早くしやァ。らちがあかねへときかねへよ。花魁があんまり気をよくさっしゃるから、みんずるくってなるもんじゃァねへ。」
（と言い捨てて湯へ行く。○湯へ行くとき、つとの所へ黄楊〔つげ〕の櫛を逆さに刺すは、髪の癖を直すためなり。○その後へ小間物屋、頭にかんざしを二三本さし、荷を肩にかけて来り、座敷をのぞきとて——）
【小間物屋】（頭に刺していたたった一つの作り物のかんざしを抜いて）「花魁へ、此のかんざしは、今度引かせやしたが、とんだ甲〔こう〕がいいから、取っておきなされませんか。」（と見せる。）
【夕霧】（取って日に透かして見て）「ほんにこりゃあいいよ。死ぬほど欲しいが、今はちっと相談ができんせんから、明日まで売れずにいたら、持ってお出なんし。」
【小間物屋】「アイ、左様ならば、もしけふ中に売れずは、明日持って参りましょう。おめえさんのお気に入ら——」

"And then — now, now — get that done quickly, will you. Yukino, bring the rice-bran bag and a bathing robe, and a foot-wiper too. Then go around to the various places and collect the account slips [kakitsuke]. Be quick about it now. Nothing ever gets done unless I keep at it. Because the oiran is far too easygoing, everyone gets lazy and you can't help it."
*(Saying this, she heads off to the bath and is done with them. ○ Note: when going to the bath, she tucks a boxwood [tsuge] comb in upside-down at the nape — this is to train the hair into shape. ○ After she has gone, a traveling sundries-vendor [komamono-ya] arrives — with two or three hairpins stuck in his own head, carrying his pack on his shoulder — and peeks into the room.)*
**[Sundries vendor]** *(removing the single decorative artificial hairpin he had worn in his own hair)* "For the oiran — I've just had this hairpin made, and it's turned out exceptionally fine, so won't you take it and keep it for yourself?" *(showing it to her)*
**[Yūgiri]** *(taking it and holding it up to the light to inspect it)* "My, this really is lovely. I want it desperately, but right now I'm not quite in a position to discuss it — if it hasn't sold by tomorrow, do bring it back."
**[Sundries vendor]** "Yes, of course. If it hasn't sold today, I'll bring it back tomorrow. Since it's to your liking—"
