「——なんし。お針部屋〔はりべや〕も見てきなんしよ。もしまだこざァ、下〔した〕の中郎〔ちうろう〕の人を頼んで、呼びにやってくんなんし。」
（中郎〔ちうろう〕とは、内証〔ないしょう〕の小使いをする下男〔げなん〕の事なり。これも此〔この〕里に限りたることばなり。）
【川路〔川〕】「雪のや、お歯黒〔おはぐろ〕を取ってきて。それから楓屋〔かへでや〕の通いを持っていって、板〔いた〕を一本、襟つけとくこと。すきと黒〔もつへ〕を取ってきや。ついでに割り紙と煙草も取ってきや。夜舟さん、筆楊枝〔ふでやうじ〕を出しな。」
（と言いつける。筆楊枝とはお歯黒筆〔おはぐろふで〕のことなり。）

〔ト書き〕夜舟〔よふね〕と夕霧〔夕〕と川路〔川〕が鏡台を並べ、櫛だとう〔台〕・半蔵〔はんざう〕などとり揃える程なく、雪のやはお歯黒を買ってきて火鉢〔ひばち〕の上に乗せておく。夕霧〔夕〕と川路〔川〕は半蔵〔はんざう〕を膝の上へのせ、まず筆楊枝を火鉢の灰の中にてかき回し、鏡に向かい鉄漿〔かね〕をつける。○向かう座敷〔ざしき〕には床の間の上に杯〔さかづき〕を下げてしばって乗せてある。これ、待ち人の願いなるべし。留め袖の信管〔しんかん〕をかして、火入れの火をはさみ火鉢へ入れながら——

"—please do check. Go and look in the sewing room (*hari-beya*) as well. If she still hasn't come, please ask one of the *chūrō* downstairs to go and call for her."
*(A note: A* chūrō *refers to a manservant who performs errands within the house on the quiet. This too is a term used exclusively in this quarter [the Yoshiwara].)*
**[Kawaji / 川]** "Yukinoya, go and fetch the tooth-blackening (*ohaguro*). Then take the Kaidea-ya (*楓屋*) account book with you and get one board [of tooth-blackener] put on the tab. Bring back the *sukito-guro* [a fine black tooth-lacquer finish] while you're at it. And also bring back some scrap paper and tobacco. Yobune-san, get out the brush-pick (*fude-yōji*)."
*(She gives her orders. A "brush-pick" refers to the brush used for applying tooth-blackening.)*

*[Stage direction]: Before long, Yobune, Yūgiri, and Kawaji set out their mirror stands side by side, arranging their combs, their* hanzō *[lacquer stands for ohaguro tools], and other accessories. Yukinoya returns having purchased the ohaguro preparation and sets it on the brazier to warm. Yūgiri and Kawaji place their* hanzō *on their laps, first stirring the brush-pick in the ash of the brazier, then face the mirror and apply the iron tooth-lacquer (*kane*). ○ In the parlor opposite, a sake cup is hung and tied, suspended above the alcove (*tokonoma*). This is doubtless a wish [a charm] made for someone awaited. [One of the women] takes the "fastening sleeve" (*tome-sode*) lining strip, picks up the fire from the fire-holder with tongs, and places it in the brazier, while—*
