And here I was, offering to sponsor your *mizuage* [the ceremony marking a young attendant's debut as a full prostitute] and all."
**[禿 (gebi)]** *(smoothing her hair at the temples with an ivory lacquerware comb)* "Oh, what a know-it-all bug you are."
**[Gyūkichi]** "What kind of bug, you say? A *namabi-no-mushi* [a 'raw' bug, i.e., an impertinent pest] — honestly, I can't believe my ears."

**[Itagoto / 琴]** "Gebi-kawa, could you bring me some folding paper [for sealing a letter]? And while you're at it, could you give the metal fittings on the chest of drawers a bit of a polish?"
