（花哥〔はなうた〕が表を見ようとしたが、薦草〔こもそう〕はもう通り過ぎてしまったので、そばにある姿見〔すがたみ〕を取って、表の簾〔すだれ〕の方へ移して映してみている所へ、下から——）
【中郎〔ちゅうろう〕】（来たり）「たのまれましたが、この勘解〔かんけ〕をちっとおつきなすって下さりまし。」

【中居〔なかい〕】「おまえがたはめえよう、そんな事をいなさる。この中〔ちゅう〕もこっちに平〔ひら〕の蓋〔ふた〕がござりやした。わたしらが預かりだから、なくなっちゃあめえわくでございやす。馬鹿らしい。」

折ふし、廊下にて座敷持〔ざしきもち〕の女郎〔じょろう〕——

【浮気木〔うわきぎ〕】「これ、あの——あの商人〔あきんど〕屋へ行って錫〔すず〕の香箱〔こうばこ〕と、ト——下の木薬屋〔きぐすりや〕へ行って血止め〔ちどめ〕と銀箔〔ぎんぱく〕を買って来や。そして帰りにお針〔はり〕べやで綿〔わた〕をちっと——」

*(Hanuta tries to look out at the front, but the komosō [mendicant monk] has already passed by, so she takes a nearby standing mirror and moves it toward the front bamboo blind to try to catch a reflection of him. Just then, from downstairs —)*
**[Chūrō / 中郎]** *(arriving)* "I've been asked to bring this — would you be so kind as to add a little to this account ledger?"
*(He shows her the account book [kanke-chō].)*
**[Hanuta / 花哥]** "How much are we talking about?"
**[Chūrō / 中郎]** "Just one line, if you would."
**[Itagoto / 琴]** "Mm — I'll add to it now."
*(Just as she says this, someone arrives.)*
**[Nakai / 中居 (serving woman)]** "Gebi-kawa-san, there seems to be a dish missing in this room over here — would you mind taking a look?"
**[禿 (gebi)]** "Don't know anything about it."
**[Nakai / 中居]** "You lot are always like this, saying such things. Just the other day there was a flat lid here too. Since we're the ones responsible for keeping track of things, if they go missing it's a real headache for us. How aggravating!"
*(She leaves, grumbling.)*
**[禿 (gebi)]** "Knew it? Didn't know it?" *(brushing the matter aside.)*
*Just then, in the corridor, a full-room courtesan [zashikimochi] appears —*
**[Uwakigi / 浮気木]** *(She appears slightly unwell; she wears a white undyed headband, and has removed her ohaguro [black tooth dye], presenting a startling appearance with her natural white teeth.)*
*[Her attendant 禿 is whispering into her ear.]*
**[Uwakigi / 浮気木]** "Now listen — go to that merchant's shop and get a tin incense box, and — go down to the herbal medicine shop and buy some styptic [blood-stopping medicine] and silver foil. And on your way back, get a little cotton from the sewing room —"
