（ト、この内、【川竹〔かわたけ〕】がたばこをつけて【お吉〔おきち〕】にやる。油手〔あぶらて〕ゆえ、紙で持ち添えて飲む。）
【川竹〔かわたけ〕】「雪野〔ゆきの〕や、これをこぼしてきや。」
（ト、半蔵〔はんぞう〕を突き出す。「半蔵の中にはお歯黒〔おはぐろ〕の唾〔つば〕きが八分目ほどあって、真ん中に紅〔べに〕の唾きがふたちょぼあり、悪紙〔わるがみ〕と見す紙のくずふきがら五つ六つあり。」連子〔れんじ〕には小袖かけて干してあり、所々紅のついたさらしの手拭いの洗い濃〔こ〕さきやつも干してあり。）
○ほどなく髪も結い終わり、【お吉〔おきち〕】は外へ行き、【川竹〔かわたけ〕】は手水〔ちょうず〕に行き、あとには【夕霧〔ゆうぎり〕】ひとり、火鉢の前にしょんぼりと、衿〔えり〕に顔半分埋めて物案じ姿にて居る。杉箸〔すぎばし〕を火箸にしたやつもへし折れてけぶる。

**[Kawatake / 川竹]** "Yukino, take this and empty it out, will you."
*(She thrusts out a *hanzō* [a small spittoon/container]. "Inside the hanzō there is ohaguro-spittle [blackened tooth-dye spit] filled to about eight-tenths full, with two little spots of rouge-tinged spittle in the middle, and five or six scraps of used tissue paper that appear to be inferior-grade paper." On the latticed window-shelf [renji], a small-sleeved robe is hung out to air; here and there, bleached hand-towels stained with rouge, washed and still rank-smelling, are also hung to dry.)*
*Before long, the hair-dressing is finished. [O-Kichi] goes outside; [Kawatake] goes to wash her hands; and [Yūgiri] is left alone, huddled despondently before the brazier, her face half-buried in her collar, lost in thought. Even a chopstick of cedar wood, pressed into service as a pair of fire-tongs, snaps and smolders.*
