**[Kawa / 川]** "I will manage things so that all goes well."
*(And with that — glancing about to see if anyone is watching — she brings out the secret lover who had been hidden in the wardrobe, sends him off on an errand at last, and [he] slips behind the folding screen. ○ Now, to explain: this secret lover is none other than Izaemon, the only son of the house of Ippafuji-ya [a wealthy merchant establishment]. He and Yugiri had fallen deeply in love with one another, and as their affair deepened it had come to bring disgrace [upon him], and he had been disowned [by his family]. Living in a back-alley tenement [ura-dana] in Naranohayako-no-Tekashiwa [a district name], he had been sheltered there out of Yugiri's compassion and devotion. The night before, they had watched for a moment when no one was looking and brought him upstairs, hiding him in the wardrobe — but he had missed his chance to slip away, and so he had been made to stay hidden there the whole of this day. As Izaemon steps behind the folding screen, he accidentally stamps heavily on an ink-brush [fude] lying on the ground and gives a start — but such is the nature of those who carry a blemish [i.e., a guilty secret], and they must bear it in silence.)*
**[Yū / 夕]** *(in a hushed voice)* "You must have been dreadfully bored in there, poor thing. Since it would draw attention if I came myself, I had someone else see to you — but you weren't left hungry, were you?"
**[I / 伊 — Izaemon]** "No, Kawatake looked in on me from time to time and made sure I was all right, so I wasn't hungry at all. And for relieving myself too, she was thoughtful about it — she pulled out some cotton wadding from a quilt and stuffed it into a hanzo [a small water vessel], so there was no sound made. So from beginning to end there was nothing to trouble me."
**[Yū / 夕]** *(gazing at his face with a long, tender look)* "Truly — that I've brought you to such a wretched, helpless state like this, it's all because of me—"
