と叫ぶのを聞きつけ、若い者たちが「われもわれも」と駆け来たり、握り拳〔こぶし〕の雨あられ——
無残やな、伊左衛門〔いざえもん〕の頭の上に降りかかる。
夕霧〔ゆうぎり〕は、涙もろともに、中を隔てて我が身を押しかぶせ、伊左衛門の身を庇〔かば〕いながら、
「これや、むごらしい。どうぞいの、皆〔みな〕の衆〔しゅ〕、またしゃんせ。伊左衛門さんに咎〔とが〕はない。この人さんをぶつならば、まずわたしから先へぶち殺してしまわんせ。」
聞き入れないなら、これこう——と、傍〔そば〕に有り合う鏡台〔きょうだい〕の剃刀箱〔かみそりばこ〕に手をかける。
やり手はあわてて押しとどめ、
「これ、夕霧〔きり〕！ こんな大事な代物〔しろもの〕、おまえに傷〔きず〕をつけさせてなるものか！」
と、もぎ取る。
その間〔あいだ〕に、大勢の者たちが伊左衛門を片足〔かたあし〕を掴〔つか〕んで引き出す。

Hearing this cry, the young male workers of the brothel came rushing in one after another, and a hail of fists rained down—
How pitiful — blow after blow fell upon Izaemon's head.
Yūgiri, weeping, threw herself over him across the space between them, shielding Izaemon's body with her own:
"This is dreadful! Please, I beg you — everyone, stop! Stop, I say! Izaemon-san has done nothing wrong. If you are going to strike this man, then kill me first before you lay another hand on him."
And if they would not listen — she reached for the razor-box on the nearby dressing stand.
The yarite [brothel matron] panicked and rushed to restrain her:
"Now listen here, Kiri! You think I'd ever let you damage such a precious commodity?!"
— and wrenched the box away from her.
In that moment, the crowd of young men grabbed Izaemon by the leg and hauled him out.
