"You will no doubt regard me with suspicion, as we have not previously been introduced. I am one Sanemon, who serves as chief clerk (*bantō*) at the Kyoto branch store. I have come to this city on business, and having called upon the master of the house, I was informed that you, sir, have been disowned (*kandō*) — what a state of affairs! You are young, and a single moment of error is perhaps unavoidable. Should your heart truly be reformed, I would be glad to intercede on your behalf regarding the matter of your disownment. Furthermore, that you are so deeply devoted to the lady Yūgiri here — this must surely be the bond of the red cord of fate (*sekijō*). Provided your intentions are honorable, there need be no obstacle in the fact that she is a courtesan. I resolved that I would first ascertain whether Yūgiri's feelings are true or false, and having confirmed this, arrange for her ransom (*nebiki*) and see you both happily wed.'
