「実否〔じつぷ〕をたださんと、今日わざと居続〔いつづ〕けをし、先ほど茶屋〔ちゃや〕に申し含め、帰りし体〔てい〕にもてなして、人なき折を幸いに、これなる長持〔ながもち〕に身を忍〔しの〕び、屏風〔びょうぶ〕の内の睦〔むつ〕まじいことを聞き届け、夕霧殿のまことの心を見抜いた上は、今日中に亭主〔ていしゅ〕吉田屋喜左衛門〔よしだやきざえもん〕に逢い、身受〔みう〕けの埒〔らち〕をあけ申さん。その手付金〔てつけきん〕は、すなわちここに』と、懐中〔かいちゅう〕より財布〔さいふ〕を取り出し、伊左衛門が手に渡す。

"— and to ascertain the truth of the matter, I deliberately prolonged my stay today, and instructed the teahouse attendant to make a show of my departure, and taking advantage of a moment when no one was present, I concealed myself inside this long chest (*nagamochi*) here, listened carefully to the tender exchanges within the screen, and having seen through to the true feelings of Lady Yūgiri — I am now prepared to call upon the proprietor of this establishment, Yoshidaya Kizaemon, before the end of this very day, and settle the arrangements for her ransom (*miuke*). Here, in the meantime, is the deposit toward that payment.' So saying, he drew a purse from within his breast and placed it in Izaemon's hands.
Izaemon received it and looked inside — a striped purse filled to the brim — nay, this was in fact a brocade (*nishiki*) purse, stuffed to the very ears with five hundred *ryō* in gold — and accompanying the money, a single letter. Puzzled, he opened and read it: 'Whereas it has come to our hearing that you, for your part, have reformed your heart and conduct, from this day forth your disownment (*kandō*) is hereby pardoned.' The hand was unmistakably that of his father.
