わずかながら心がけるところがある。身近な例えを取るならば、子供をなだめて戒めるのに、飴を使ったり灸を使ったりするようなものである。すなわち、飴は譬喩・方便であり、灸は仁義五常である。そうであれば、この小冊に「教訓」の二字を冠するのは、根拠がないとは言えないであろうか。

...there is a small but sincere intention behind it all. To take a familiar example: it is like soothing and admonishing a child by means of sweets and moxa cautery. The sweets, in other words, represent the parables and expedient means; the moxa represents the principles of benevolence, righteousness, and the Five Constant Virtues. If that is so, then one can hardly say there is no reason to place the two characters *kyōkun* ("moral instruction") at the head of this little volume.
