うろたへるは。盗人を見て索（なわ）をなふといふもの也。
扨其内／自分（じぶん）にて。医者を撰ばんとおもはゝ。兎角（とかく）
篤実（とくじつ）なる人を頼むべし。今時のならひにて。多く
世㕝にかしこき人を見ては。療治にはたらき有
やうに思ふて信仰す。是則療治を麁（そ）まつに
するといふもの也。篤実の人は見かけが不調法（ぶてうほう）に
見ゆる故。多くは良医（よいいしや）を棄（すて）て庸医（わるいいしや）を頼み。害（かい）を

まねく㕝多し。篤実親切（とくじつしんせつ）にて学問有るは最（さい）
上の事。学問なくとも篤実親切ならば。相応の
益は有るへし。かならず見かけの不骨（ぶこつ）気まゝ
不調法なるには依らぬ物也。其見かけに拘（かゝ）々
人は。必世㕝にはたらき能く。療治を麁まつに
する人にだまされて。却つて害を受る事也。
是第一のこゝろ得也。
現代語訳

うろたえるのは、盗人を見てから縄を綯うというものである。
さてその中で自分で医者を選ぼうと思うならば、とにかく
篤実な人を頼むべきである。今の時代の習いで、多く
世間に賢い人を見ては、療治に効果があるかのように思って信仰する。これはすなわち療治を粗末に
するというものである。篤実の人は見かけが不器用に
見えるので、多くは良医を捨てて藪医者を頼み、害を

招くことが多い。篤実で親切であり学問があるのは最も
良いことである。学問がなくとも篤実で親切ならば、相応の
益はあるであろう。必ず見かけの無骨さや気ままさ、
不器用さには関係ないものである。その見かけにこだわる
人は、必ず世間で巧みに振る舞い、療治を粗末に
する人にだまされて、かえって害を受けることである。
これが第一の心得である。

Now, if one intends to choose a doctor by oneself, in any case
one should rely on sincere people. Following the customs of today, many
people see those who are clever in worldly matters and think they will be effective in treatment, placing faith in them. This is precisely what it means to treat medical care
carelessly. Sincere people appear awkward in appearance,
so many abandon good doctors and rely on quacks, causing harm.

This happens frequently. Being sincere, kind, and learned is the best
thing. Even without learning, if one is sincere and kind, there should be corresponding
benefits. It certainly does not depend on appearing rough, willful,
or awkward. People who are fixated on such appearances
will inevitably be deceived by those who are skilled at worldly behavior but treat medical care carelessly, and will suffer harm instead.
This is the first principle to understand.
