事は。無きはづの事なれ共。其中に学問して
匙（さじ）の廻らぬ人は。生質（うまれつき）よく〳〵不器用にして。学問

第四 醫者を尊むべき事
古人の言（ことば）に。大-徳￣ヲ謂￣フ＿レ生￣ト至￣テ貴￣ハ惟命（だいとくをせいといふいたつてたつときはたゝいのち）といへり。
故に天地の間に生るゝもの。命より大切なる物
なし。其大切なる㕝は。誠（まこと）に天下／国家（こくか）にもかへがたし。

ことは、ないはずのことであるが、その中に学問をしても医術が下手な人は、生まれつきよほど不器用で、学問をしてさえ医術が上達しないのであれば、学問をしなければなおさら人を殺すであろう。このような人は、人の命を預かる医者はもちろん、何になっても役に立たない生まれつきである。しかしながら才能はなくとも、学問をした徳があるゆえに、文盲な者のようなひどい失敗はないのである。病家はこれらの事情

第四 医者を尊むべきこと
古人の言葉に「大徳を生という。至って貴いものはただ命のみ」と言っている。
故に天地の間に生まれるもので、命より大切なものはない。その大切なものは、まことに天下・国家にも代えがたいものである。

The ancients said, "Great virtue is called life. The most precious thing is life alone."
Therefore, among all things born between heaven and earth, nothing is more precious than life. That precious thing is truly irreplaceable, even compared to the empire and the nation.
