現代語訳
古代の賢人が著した書物は棟に満ち、牛が汗をかくほど多いが、まだそれらを理解したことのない者もいる。近頃、病家への教訓を示すものがあり、事情によく通じて、勧善懲悪に優れているが、それでもまだ必ずしも懇切丁寧な教戒とは言えない。
ここに岩名子が「病家教訓草」を刻んで、私に序文を求めてきた。私がこれを読むと、その趣旨は実に懇切であると言える。俗語を用いて著し、諸説を縦横に展開し、広く自分の意見を通しながらも、荒々しい空論を無理に作り出すことはしていない。論説であれ歌であれ、皆これまでに神の授けによって得たものであり、あえて自らこれを正しいとして言葉を弄して人を欺くものではない。これを分析して九条とし、まとめて一巻としている。
英語訳
The writings of ancient sages fill the rafters and make oxen sweat from their weight, yet there are still those who have never come to understand them. Recently, there have been works offering guidance for households with illness that are well-versed in circumstances and excellent in encouraging good and punishing evil, but even these cannot necessarily be called thorough and careful instruction.
Here, Iwana-shi has published "Lessons for the Sick Household" and has requested that I write a preface. When I read it, I can say that its purpose is truly earnest. Written in common language, it develops various theories comprehensively, broadly conveying the author's own views while not forcibly creating wild and empty arguments. Whether treatise or verse, all has been obtained through divine inspiration from the past, and is not an attempt to deceive people by willfully asserting correctness and manipulating words. This work is divided into nine sections and compiled into one volume.
