The commentary on the Sixteen Sacred Edicts was lectured several sections at a time on auspicious days of each month. According to old custom, one Purple Gold Doctor supervised education, visiting the lecture hall every third, sixth, and ninth day of each ten-day period to inspect the diligence or laziness of the students, while also managing tribute ceremonies for travel to and from China and assisting in great rituals. Also, from among the Inner Doctors, Chief Interpreters, and scholars of Kume, one person well-versed in literature and principle was selected as Commentary Teacher, and one person skilled in punctuation and reading was selected as Exegesis Teacher. The Commentary Teacher received an annual stipend of twelve piculs of rice and established a school within the Qisheng Shrine to teach accomplished interpreters and scholars. The Exegesis Teacher received an annual stipend of eight piculs of rice and established a school at the Upper Tianfei Palace to teach beginners aged seven and above. <<Shuri also had three village schools; other village clerks and farmers' children studied under monks as teachers, all learning the national script, which had cursive writing but no standard script>> Within the courtyard inside the Lingxing Gate stands a stone stele, which Doctor Cheng Shunze inscribed. Its summary states: "Ryukyu lies far overseas, ten thousand li from China. Since the early Ming period it has maintained relations with China and received royal rank. In the twenty-fifth year of Hongwu, the king's sons and retainers' children first entered the Imperial Academy, and thirty-six families of Fujian people were also sent there for education. During the Wanli period, Purple Gold Doctor Cai Jian first painted a portrait of the Sage and led the local gentry in worshipping it at home. In the eleventh year of Kangxi, former Purple Gold Doctor Jin Zhengchun petitioned to establish a temple, and the king approved the proposal. A site was then divined in Kume village, craftsmen were ordered to prepare materials and transport them, axes and adzes were applied along with vermillion lacquer, and construction was completed by the thirteenth year of Kangxi. The following year, a statue of the Sage was sculpted in the temple with the Four Associates standing on the left and right. The king ordered Confucian officials to perform the Shidian ritual on the first ding day of the second month of spring and autumn. Having renewed the magnificent buildings and solemnized the ritual vessels, how splendid and prosperous it was! I, your servant Shunze, respectfully received the imperial command, took up my brush to record the complete account of this construction, and had it carved in stone to preserve it for posterity."
