When digging in ancient grounds or shrine precincts, one sometimes obtains rare stones. These are objects from the age of the gods, not something that people of today can understand. In Hida's Takayama, there is a friend who loves fine stones, a certain person from Fukushima who goes by the name Sōshū. He kindly gave me a rare stone, saying he had excavated it in the ninth month of Meiwa 8 (1771) at a place called Shirakawa near Takayama.
