天狗の爪石は産出場所が甚だ不思議で、何たる物であるかも詳らかではない。能登や佐渡に多い。能登七尾の一元氏の説によると、大石を割って石中に得たことがある。山中にて土砂の中に拾い、或いは大木を伐って、その枝の末に立っていることがある。海中では網にかかって上がり、或いは船の底板に立っていることがある。古い屋根に立っていたり、或いは理由もなく家内にて拾うこともあると。私も勢州榊原にて大石を砕いて石中に得たことがある。本国

Tengu Claw Stone Twenty-four Third Collection, Fifth Volume
Tengu claw stones have very mysterious places of origin, and what exactly they are is not clear. They are abundant in Noto and Sado. According to the theory of Mr. Ichigen from Nanao in Noto, there have been cases of obtaining them from within stones by breaking large rocks. They are picked up from among earth and sand in the mountains, or sometimes found standing at the tips of branches when large trees are cut down. In the sea, they come up caught in nets, or sometimes are found standing on the bottom boards of ships. They stand on old roofs, or sometimes are picked up inside houses for no apparent reason. I too have obtained them from within stones by breaking large rocks at Sakakibara in Seishū. In our home province
